All programs are girl-led and include interviews with local environmental professionals! Send an email to schedule a workshop just for your Cadette troop or Service Unit (minimum 8 girls).

  • Girls can satisfy requirements towards Cadette Animal Helpers, Night Owl, STEM Career Exploration, or Tree badges; Junior Animal Habitats and STEM Career Exploration badges; or the Tree Promise Patch.

Plastics, Pollution, and Nurdles at the Beach

Learn how you can help fight pollution through beach clean ups and discover what Nurdles are! Start with a webinar at 7 pm on Tuesday May 17 to learn about plastics, nurdles, and marine impacts from Senior GS Madisyn and Anne Marie Tipton, a biologist at Tijuana River Estuarine Research Reserve. (spoiler: nurdles are tiny plastic pellets used in manufacture of plastic projects) Then get your troop together at Carlsbad State Beach on Sunday, May 22 at 11 am to collect nurdles and report the data. Learn about how they observe wildlife, including “camera traps” and “tracking” to look for wildlife “sign.” Then take a hike with your troop in your nearby nature, and follow a scavenger hunt with wildlife and local habitat clues. Explore the harmful impacts of light pollution on humans and animals, and how city lights can be reduced. Learn about the nightlife of local wildlife, how light pollution affects their activities, and how to look for wildlife "sign." Meet local urban foresters and learn about their career path and current work. Explore the benefits of trees, how to protect and plant trees, and how they are important for climate action.
